Kamaru Usman has rejected the judges’ scorecards from his unanimous decision loss to Dricus Du Plessis, while also revealing that dropping back down to welterweight remains an option following his second successive defeat at middleweight, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Usman (21-5) met fellow former Ultimate Fighting Championship title holder Du Plessis (24-3) in the main event of UFC Oklahoma City, with the South African landing the more significant strikes from the opening bell and largely nullifying Usman’s wrestling.
Although the Nigerian-American rallied in the closing rounds, it was not enough to prevent a lopsided defeat.
Judges David Sutherland and Mike Bell scored the contest 49-46 in favour of Du Plessis, while judge Sal D’Amato had it 50-45, a scoreline Usman said he could not reconcile with what unfolded inside the octagon.
“I am no sorry loser, but I mean, 50-45? What were the judges watching? He is a big boy, and I knew he was going to be tough,” Usman said in his post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier.
