Nolan disappeared during a July 4 trip to Horn Island, Mississippi, and his body was found two days later. At the same time, the FBI’s Jackson Field Office has confirmed it is helping investigate interstate threats made against people connected to the case. It has not said who received the threats or whether the letter sent to Nolan’s family is part of that federal investigation. Meanwhile, Nolan’s parents continue to question what happened during their son’s final hours.Christine Wonsley shares disturbing hate mail after Nolan Xavier Wells’ deathChristine Wonsley revealed on Facebook that someone mailed her family a photograph from a recent news conference after drawing on it and sending it without a return address. The picture showed Christine crying, with her husband Elmore Wonsley, civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton, and family attorney Ben Crump standing beside her.The sender drew arrows from Sharpton and Crump toward Christine and added several dollar signs, appearing to suggest they were supporting the family for money. The envelope was postmarked in Denver on July 15.Sharing a photo of the letter, Christine wrote, “Whoever sent this to my home, may the good Lord have mercy on your soul.”She added, “Bold enough to send this crap but not bold enough to list your return address.”Christine said her family was facing this because they simply wanted answers.“This is America where a grieving mother and father have to deal with this type of behavior because we asked a simple question of what happened to our son and accepted all the help we could get to find answers,” she wrote.She ended the post by saying, “Please go touch some grass.”FBI confirms threats investigation as Nolan Xavier Wells’ family seeks answersThe FBI’s Jackson Field Office confirmed it is assisting local authorities with threats linked to the case.“From day one, we have been supporting Jackson County as they’ve worked to gather information and find answers for the Wells Family and the community,” the agency said.Federal officials have not shared who received the threats or what they involved.Nolan’s friend Tracestin Shepherd previously told ABC News that people who were on the Horn Island trip had also received online threats.“It worries me for my friends. It worries me for my family,” Shepherd said.“We’re all young adults and we’re still learning this whole adulthood slash life thing.”He added, “We did no wrong here, and we don’t understand how we’re getting so much hate behind it.”Nolan, a football player at Southwest Mississippi Community College, traveled to Horn Island with friends for a Fourth of July gathering. His friends have said he stayed behind after meeting a young woman and did not have his cellphone when they left. His parents have repeatedly questioned that account.Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter previously said investigators had found no evidence of foul play and believed Nolan may have drowned. However, the official autopsy, toxicology results, and a separate examination requested by the family are still pending.Speaking last week, Ben Crump questioned that explanation, saying, “If he’s drowning, nobody sees him drown? Nobody offers assistance? Nobody tries to help?”Elmore Wonsley also rejected claims that his son chose to stay behind.“I know he wouldn’t do that. I preached that to him every day … You’re lying to me,” he told TheGrio.
