Earlier, WWE officially announced the championship clash earlier this month after Punk captured the Undisputed WWE Championship and Rhodes secured the No. 1 contender's spot. But speculations were doing the rounds that the match would be scrapped by the company. The reason behind this was that if Gunther and Sami Zayn defeated CM Punk and Cody Rhodes at Saturday Night’s Main Event, both would be added to the title match, which was announced by Adam Pearce at the top of Friday’s SmackDown, held at MVP Arena in Albany, New York.Initially, WWE planned that they would add Gunther and Sami Zayn to the SummerSlam title match if they beat CM Punk and Cody Rhodes. But the situation changed at Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 18.At Saturday Night's Main Event, Punk and Rhodes prevented Gunther and Zayn from being added to their WWE Championship match at SummerSlam with the help of Nick Aldis. During the match, Gunther hit Rhodes with a championship belt and a powerbomb. He went for the pin, but Aldis pulled the official out of the ring.This means that the possibility of scrapping the Undisputed WWE Championship between Punk and Rhodes will definitely happen, as they have successfully defeated Gunther at the SNME event. This was also confirmed by WWE in their official X post: “It is official. With their victory tonight at #SNME, @CMPunk and @CodyRhodes for the WWE Championship will be ONE-ON-ONE at #SummerSlam!” They further added in another post, See you at #SummerSlam,@CMPunk and @CodyRhodes.”As it is confirmed that both CM Punk and Cody Rhodes are set to lock horns in a much-anticipated one-on-one match, it could be deduced that the match is surely going to be interesting, involving the veteran leaders of the company.
