OTTAWA — U.S. President Donald Trump ordered new 50 per cent tariffs Monday on a wide range of Canadian imports that will apply to goods covered by the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement, escalating a trade dispute the White House says stems from Canada’s policies targeting American autos, dairy and alcohol.
“As a result of these discriminatory actions that have been ongoing for many months, and despite repeated efforts by the United States to have the Canadian government remove these discriminatory measures, earlier today President Trump signed three proclamations pursuant to Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 to impose additional 50 per cent tariff on certain goods of Canada,” a senior U.S. administration official told reporters on a background basis Monday afternoon.
