Social benefits that are currently frozen, including maternity payments, child allowances, and unemployment benefits, are expected to be updated with Bulgaria's 2027 state budget, according to Konstantin Prodanov, chairman of Parliament's Budget and Finance Committee from Progressive Bulgaria.
Speaking to BNT, Prodanov said the next budget, which is expected to be considered in about two months, will introduce what he described as "real policies" and will be "entirely of Progressive Bulgaria." He said the government's priorities would include tighter control over healthcare spending, attracting more foreign investment, and carrying out administrative reforms.
He argued that while some obligations from previous years would still need to be covered, their scale would be significantly smaller. "Maternity, child allowances, unemployment benefits - all of this will be unfrozen in the 2027 budget. Then there will undoubtedly be outstanding expenses from previous years as well, but they will not be on such a scale," he said.
Addressing criticism of the current draft budget for the remainder of 2026, Prodanov rejected claims that it was anti-social. He stressed that despite the country's difficult fiscal position, the government had still allocated additional funding for pensions, wages, and social support.
