There were obviously certain shortcomings and blatant exaggerations in the investigation of Greece’s farm subsidies scandal by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office. In some cases, the reputations of politicians were unjustifiably tarnished.
However, it is also clear that OPEKEPE, the state organization responsible for distributing EU funds, had been transformed over the years into a hotbed of corruption and transactional relationships by successive governments, to the detriment of Greece’s law-abiding farmers.
The political attacks on prosecutors, on the one hand, or the celebrations for the filing of some cases against politicians, on the other, reveal an arrogant view of the political system, which provokes public sentiment.
