Joey Logano won at North Wilkesboro Speedway in a dominant performance on Sunday night, but his mega evening also served another purpose: It vaulted him two spots in the point standings and firmly into Chase for the Cup contention.With five races remaining until the 16-driver Chase field is set for NASCAR’s version of the playoffs, Logano is now a healthy 49 points clear of the cutoff line after trailing by eight points before the green flag on Sunday.That’s what a 73-point night will do for a driver, which Logano accomplished by finishing third in Stage 1 (eight points), winning Stage 2 (10 points) and winning the race (55 points).Denny Hamlin, Tyler Reddick and Ryan Blaney have all clinched spots in the Chase. Nine other drivers — Ty Gibbs, Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson, Carson Hocevar, Chase Briscoe, Chris Buescher, Christopher Bell, Daniel Suárez and William Byron — are all either very safe or relatively safe.As for the other four spots? With a 75-point maximum swing available in a single race, let’s take a closer look at the drivers within 75 points of either side of the cutoff line after North Wilkesboro.13. Bubba WallaceBefore Sunday: +55 points to the cutoffAfter Sunday: +69 points to the cutoffTracking his race: Wallace was one of six lead-lap finishers at North Wilkesboro, putting together the exact type of solid night he needed after a disappointing last-lap penalty at Atlanta that took him from second place to 29th. Not only did Wallace finish sixth on Sunday, but his seven stage points in Stage 2 were crucial to helping him gain an additional 14 points to the cut line.Outlook: There’s no reason to think Wallace would miss the Chase, and he heads back to the Brickyard 400 this week as the defending race winner. Shane van GisbergenBefore Sunday: +31 points to the cutoffAfter Sunday: +54 points to the cutoffTracking his race: An absolute monster of a performance for the driver known as “SVG,” who came to America as a road-racing specialist with no pavement oval experience. Van Gisbergen showed again what a world-class talent he is, this time with his finest effort on a short track to date. SVG nearly won Stage 1 (he was nipped at the line by Gibbs) and then finished fifth in Stage 2 before finishing a wildly impressive fifth in the race to score the third-most points of any competitor at North Wilkesboro. His other Trackhouse Racing teammates were 27th and 32nd, underscoring just how notable SVG’s result was on Sunday.Outlook: Few would have expected SVG to gain any points to the cut line at North Wilkesboro, let alone 23. But now he’s put himself in a remarkable position to secure an improbable Chase spot if he can somehow hang on through a challenging Indianapolis race and three short tracks before reaching the anything-can-happen Daytona race.15. Joey LoganoBefore Sunday: -8 points to the cutoffAfter Sunday: +49 points to the cutoffTracking his race: A vintage Logano performance could not have come at a better time, as he led a career-high 323 laps and looked like the three-time champion he is. The confidence booster of a race was not only crucial for the driver, but for all of Team Penske — which has struggled on the larger tracks this season and was looking to North Wilkesboro as a test of strength. Well, the test was clearly passed.Outlook: With three more short ovals on the schedule (Iowa, New Hampshire and Richmond), Logano has a terrific chance to increase his cushion to the cut line before reaching Daytona — where he also happens to be one of the best drafters in the series. It looks like Logano will be in.16. Austin CindricBefore Sunday: +32 to the cutoffAfter Sunday: +33 to the cutoffTracking his race: Cindric essentially held serve with his 14th-place finish on Sunday, which was helped by getting two points in Stage 1 — the difference between gaining and losing to the cut line this weekend. He likely would have hoped for a better night based on the speed of his Penske teammates, but all of Penske now has to be heartened by the performance of their Fords.Outlook: Cindric’s chances will almost certainly come down to Daytona, but he should head there next month in decent shape to make it if Penske’s short track speed looks as real as it did at North Wilkesboro.Austin Cindric stayed just above the cutline, still with a decent cushion. Erik JonesBefore Sunday: +8 to the cutoffAfter Sunday: -33 to the cutoffTracking his race: This was a damaging night to the Legacy Motor Club driver’s Chase hopes and not at all what the No. 43 team was looking for. Jones ended up finishing 21st and failed to score any stage points, which isn’t a good sign for upcoming short tracks.Outlook: Given the Toyotas should be fast at Indianapolis, that makes this upcoming race crucial for Jones to score as many points as possible before returning to the shorter tracks. Jones was as high as 14th in the standings just a few weeks ago, but has now slipped three spots and faces his largest deficit since May 31 after the Nashville race.18. Ryan PreeceBefore Sunday: -26 to the cutoffAfter Sunday: -48 to the cutoffTracking his race: Preece, a short-track specialist, was surely hoping for more on Sunday. He started 21st due to qualifying being rained out and was unable to score any stage points during the race — a crucial missed opportunity. Despite rallying for a 10th-place finish, it wasn’t enough to keep him from losing 22 points to the cut line.Outlook: This one was a bit of a gut punch, but it’s not over yet. Preece should still be strong at places like Iowa, New Hampshire and Richmond, but there’s now an uphill battle to make the Chase — particularly when considering the final spot may come down to SVG (currently 69 points ahead of Preece) as opposed to the two Penske drivers currently in the final two bubble spots.19. Brad KeselowskiBefore Sunday: -43 to the cutoffAfter Sunday: -58 to the cutoffTracking his race: On the surface, you’d think Keselowski’s solid seventh-place finish at North Wilkesboro (plus four points in Stage 2) would have made for a great night to chop the deficit to the cut line. Instead, he lost 15 points. Why? Because the drivers he’s trying to catch include Logano and van Gisbergen, which made for a tough night.Outlook: Keselowski is going to need some classic performances to make it. Maybe a surprising run at Indianapolis, a top-five at one of the short tracks and a huge points haul in the regular-season finale at Daytona. That said, he’ll probably also need some help by way of some misfortune happening to drivers ahead of him.Not quite in range20. Michael McDowell, -83 to the cutoff (-47 before Sunday)21.
