Seeking modifications in the Tamil Nadu Government’s ‘Thayumanavar Scheme’ in which essential commodities to the aged and the physically challenged cardholders are being distributed at their doorstep, the ration shop workers submitted petition to District Collector Anand Mohan on Monday.The petitioners said the aged, the physically challenged and the sick, who were unable to walk, alone should be listed as ‘beneficiaries’ under the ‘Thayumanavar Scheme’ and there was no harm in giving the essential commodities at their doorsteps. If any of these beneficiaries have healthy family members enrolled in the same family card, they should be asked to buy it from the ration shop.Since the part-time ration shops have not been provided with ‘point-of-sale’ equipment, sale of essential commodities to the beneficiaries of ‘Thayumanavar Scheme’ at their doorsteps is impossible. Hence, the norms should be modified accordingly. Since carrying the ration materials to the homes of the beneficiaries living in apartments or in narrow lanes is impossible, the government should allow the ration shop workers to hire the labourers for this job and pay them accordingly.The loading, unloading and transportation charges of ration materials should be increased. Since good number of aged women and differently abled ration shop workers could not take the ration materials to the beneficiaries’ houses, they should be exempted from this scheme, the petitioners said.The farmers submitted a petition with the Collector seeking the immediate disbursal of money for the paddy they had sold to National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India (NCCF) six months ago.“Even as the farmers are taking loans from the banks and the moneylenders to meet their medical expenses and educational expenses of their children, the NCCF is yet to disburse the money for the paddy procured from us”, said D. Abraham, Tirunelveli district secretary of Coordination Committee of Tamil Nadu All Farmers’ Associations.Seeking Kattunayakan community certificate for her two sons studying in the college and the school now, one Petchiammal from Laluhapuram near Tirunelveli Town submitted a petition to the Collector, on whose initiative a group of Kattunayakan community students from Ramaiyanpatti received this all-important document recently for pursuing their higher education.Another group of villagers from Karunkaradu near here submitted a petition seeking the operation of sufficient number of buses to their village in the morning and the evening to facilitate the students’ travel to and from their educational institutions.
