The Khayelitsha Boxing Academy (KBA), a registered non-profit organisation and amateur boxing gym in Lingelethu West, combines boxing with mentorship, academic support and life skills.
In the heart of Khayelitsha, a local boxing academy is doing more than training young fighters. It is helping children stay in school, while doing education through sport, teaching boxers discipline, responsibility and a sense of community.
The Khayelitsha Boxing Academy (KBA), a registered non-profit organisation and amateur boxing gym in Lingelethu West, combines boxing with mentorship, academic support and life skills.
Olivia Jade Williams, the chairperson of the KBA said: “We have also created a space where they can sit and do their homework in a peaceful environment. The boxers within the space come from different walks of life, and we try our best to provide mentorship for these boxers.”
According to Williams, the academy is fortunate that the majority of its coaches and executive members live locally. Having been raised in Khayelitsha, they possess direct experience with the various challenges the community faces.
