Prosecutors in Lithuania have asked a court to conclude a case against a French national accused of illegally transporting migrants across the country's border, using a simplified procedure known as a penal order.
According to the pre-trial investigation, the man picked up 19 foreign nationals with no permanent residence in Lithuania while in Latvia on July 5, loading them into the cargo compartment of a minivan he was driving.
Those on board were found to include 11 Iranian nationals, four Pakistani nationals, three Afghan nationals and one person of unestablished nationality.
Investigators say the defendant was transporting the migrants to Poland in exchange for a promised payment of €7,000.
En route, he crossed into Lithuanian territory the same day, but was stopped by police while driving along the Jurbarkas–Šakiai road.
