DENVER — Because it is getting later in July, Cincinnati Reds third baseman Eugenio Suárez has already had a discussion with his wife about the possibility of another trade.
His return to Cincinnati, where he established himself as a big leaguer, was supposed to be a storybook reunion. He was the veteran who could help a young team get over the hump, and a fan favorite coming back to a city the native Venezuelan considers a second home.
But with Cincinnati almost assuredly in sell mode ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline, Suárez is one of several Reds on expiring contracts who could be of interest to contenders.
“We think we’re not getting traded,” Suárez said on Saturday, his 35th birthday. “That’s our main thought. Don’t think about that, just try to play baseball. That’s my main thing right now.”
The better Suárez plays, however, the more likely he is to be moved — and there are signs that he’s coming around.
