Four runners will travel to Samoa this month for a world-first endurance challenge that will see them run two marathons in two countries on the same day while raising funds and awareness for children affected by parental alcohol abuse.
The challenge, known as the Chasing Yesterday Marathons, begins on July 25 in Samoa, where participants will complete a 42.2-kilometre marathon before flying to American Samoa. After crossing the International Date Line, they will effectively travel 24 hours back in time and run a second marathon on what is technically the previous day.
Organisers said the challenge symbolises a feeling shared by many people who grew up in households affected by alcoholism — the wish to go back and change painful childhood experiences.
The event will raise funds for the National Association for Children of Alcoholics (Nacoa), a United Kingdom charity that supports children living with parental alcohol problems.
Participants include television personality Calum Best, a Nacoa patron and son of late football legend George Best; wellbeing influencer and Nacoa ambassador Josh Connolly; sports commentator and journalist Ian Stringer; and endurance athlete Scott Murdoch.
