—The quake. A magnitude 7.4 earthquake, put at 7.3 by the US Geological Survey, struck off the coast of Chiapas in southern Mexico on 17 July.

—The reach. It was felt across Chiapas and Oaxaca, in Mexico City, and into Guatemala and El Salvador.

—The scare. A tsunami warning was issued and small waves of about 0.3 metres were recorded before the alert was lifted.
