Josh Kerr wants to bring more middle-distance records into the modern era but not while the ink is still wet from writing “the final chapter…for right now” by running the fastest mile in history. It took the Scotsman three minutes and 42.66secs on Saturday to craft the perfect ending to a story the public became aware of in March, when Kerr outlined his intention to come to the London Diamond League and wipe out the previous record, set by Hicham El Guerrouj 27 years ago.The Moroccan’s 1500m world record has stood untouched since 1998, but Kerr, the 2023 world champion and 2024 Olympic silver medallist at the distance, is at least trying to live in the moment.“I did get in trouble for talking about other records when I woke up (on Sunday morning),” Kerr told the Press Association.“I was told to enjoy this one for a little bit before I’m allowed to talk about them any more, but I think I have it in the legs to go after some other records.“I need to see how my body bounces off of this one, but I want to bring these middle-distance records into the modern era, and I see that as a pursuit that I’m really enjoying right now.Kerr described the last 110m as an “out of body experience” (Adam Davy/PA) (PA Wire)“I’m not promising anything, but I do think it’s in the legs, so why not try?”He describes those final 110 metres in front of a 60,000 capacity crowd as an “out of body experience…my deepest flow state (and) a feeling I’ll remember for the rest of my life”.Previous mile record holders Steve Cram and Lord Sebastian Coe were among the more expected names in the flood of felicitations that followed, but even Scottish rock duo the Proclaimers, best known for their song 500 Miles, reached out on social media.England defender Ezri Konza, when asked by ITV at the World Cup if players like Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane are convinced of their greatness, immediately said yes.Does Kerr, with mounting evidence to back his own, agree? He replied: “You have to be a little bit. You have to have a couple of screws loose to do what we do.“I think I have a deep belief in myself, and with the workload that I put in, every cell of my body realised that this was going to be possible. I just needed to make sure that my mind was capable of letting my body do its job.Kerr has more chapters to write (Adam Davy/PA) (PA Wire)“Growing up, I was surrounded by incredible role models, and I thought, ‘Why not me?’.“There have been some rough days in there and real low moments. I had to lean on Scottish Athletics and British Athletics to pull me out of those holes with the help of my parents and family.“(Saturday) was not the whole story. It’s the final chapter for where we’re at right now.”
