British Heart Foundation stores are set to close across the country after the charity said June that it planned to close about 150 stores over the next two years06:13, 20 Jul 2026Updated 15:41, 20 Jul 2026The British Heart Foundation has confirmed a first wave of 87 branch closures as charities face the battle of rising costs and changing shopping habits.‌The stores concerned are due to shut in the coming months, and follows the announcement of 150 closures over the next two years in June.‌The British Heart Foundation said at the time that the cull was to “ensure our retail network remains commercially sustainable”, blaming “rising operating costs and changing customer habits, which means some of our shops and stores are no longer financially sustainable.”‌It comes after another charity Cancer Research UK, announced plans last October to axe up to 190 stores. The first 90 were due to have closed by May.Despite bringing in more than £225million in contributions over the past 10 years, Cancer Research UK said it was facing “rising costs, inflationary pressures, and changing consumer habits”. It singled out fewer shoppers, growing competition form online resell websites as well as higher national insurance contributions. Other retailers have criticised Labour Chancellor Rachel Reeves for hiking employer national insurance contributions for driving up their costs, although the move impacts all sectors.‌The fact that charity shops are now closing is further concern as they were seen being able to fill premises when other retailers were unable to, as well as giving people access to good value purchases while raising money for worthy causes.The British Heart Foundation was formed in 1961, when cardiovascular diseases caused more than half of all deaths in the UK, but when no-one understood the underlying causes and there was very little research being done to find the answers‌Dr Charmaine Griffiths, its chief executive, said in June: “Our shops mean so much to our colleagues, brilliant volunteers and communities across the UK. They are places where people come together to donate, shop and volunteer, helping to make a real difference to lives affected by cardiovascular disease“We know this will be a difficult time for our dedicated colleagues and volunteers in affected stores and emphasise our deep appreciation and gratitude for all they have done for BHF and the communities they serve.“Like most retailers, we are facing an exceptionally challenging trading environment. Cardiovascular disease remains one of the UK’s biggest killers and our priority is funding research to save lives. We must take the difficult step to close some of our shops to sustain retail’s important contribution to funding BHF’s groundbreaking research.”‌Michelle Mitchell OBE, chief executive of Cancer Research UK, said back in October: “Without action, we predict many of our shops will become unprofitable.”Jonathan Mail, spokesman for the Charity Retail Association, said the number of charity shops had fallen from around 11,200 before the Covid pandemic to just over 9,900 now.
