Dave Letele has announced he will 'step back' from NZ Muscle a week after he was appointed as the new chief executive of the supplement company."I came in with the best of intentions, to help a business front up and fix things properly. I've realised I can't help in the way it needs, and the right thing to do is be honest about that," he posted to his Brown Buttabean social media page.NZ Muscle hit strife after a former employee posted a YouTube video making claims of questionable practices. The company recalled some creatine products that could contain undeclared dairy.That prompted the Commerce Commission and Ministry of Primary Industries to investigate.Letele had wanted to give it his "best shot of trying to turn it around" and protect the jobs of its 35 staff."The better I can turn it around, it's only going to help myself and my family," he said last Tuesday.The former boxer turned social activist wished the NZ Muscle team well and said "there are good people there working hard to get it right"."Back to the work I've always done. Thank you to everyone who backed me."'Shortly after taking on the role, Letele said he faced criticism and death threats for taking the role.Posting on his Brown Butterbean Facebook page, he said he had been receiving racist hate mail."People want answers which I fully understand. But I need time to find out what's actually happened. It's now hard to do this with so much noise and now I have to worry for my family's safety."I've entered this with my eyes wide open. I've taken on a company that has f**ked up and it's my job to come fix it and make it better than before."I understand people are upset and what's happened before my time. But this behaviour online, the death threats and posting of addresses is going too far. Two wrongs don't make a right. Seeing my wife in tears and my youngest son scared breaks my heart. But what can I do? If I do something silly I lose it all. Everyone who depends on me will be let down."
