The credibility of Parliament's impeachment inquiry into President Cyril Ramaphosa could hinge on a single appointment this week, with political analysts warning that the Section 89 committee's choice of an evidence leader will determine whether the process is viewed as independent or politically compromised.
The committee is expected to meet on Wednesday to consider the names of senior counsel nominated by members to lead evidence in the inquiry.
Among the names reportedly nominated by parties are former Pension Funds Adjudicator and deputy director of the National Prosecuting Authority's Asset Forfeiture Unit Vuyani Ngalwana SC and Adv Marumo Moerane, a senior counsel since 1994 who has made numerous appearances at the High Court, Supreme Court of Appeal and Constitutional Court.
Other names include veteran company law, insolvency law and commercial litigation from the Cape Bar, Doron Goldberg SC and Kate Hofmeyer SC, who has acted as judge at the Johannesburg and Western Cape divisions of the high court.
