Iran remained defiant and retaliated against US assets across the Middle East as the United States launched airstrikes for an eighth consecutive night under an expanded military campaign.

The renewed spate of violence stems from the two sides' scramble for control of the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow Persian Gulf choke point that carries one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments during peacetime.
