The World Cup final is set to take place between Spain and Argentina tonight, and for the first time in the tournament's history, there'll be a halftime show.17:08, 19 Jul 2026The World Cup final takes place tonight as Spain and Argentina battle to be crowned champions - but this year will see a historic event: for the first time, there will be a half-time show.‌While half-time at a football game is usually a chance to grab a drink or a snack, make a dash for the toilets or debrief on the first half with friends, this year’s break will be very different to anything else seen before.‌For the first time in the tournament’s history, there will be a half-time show complete with performances from Madonna, Shakira, BTS and Justin Bieber.‌It’s already caused major controversy in the sporting world, as a half-time show is usually synonymous with the Super Bowl, and the newly implemented change means half-time will last up to 25 minutes instead of the usual 15.The show will take place on Sunday night at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey and has been described by FIFA as a “landmark celebration at the intersection of sport, music and global impact”.‌And now, Shakira is already gearing up to make history. In an interview with The Capital Evening Show with Jimmy Hill, the Colombian superstar opened up on her upcoming gig.During the conversation, Shakira revealed she’s still working out how to make her final performance distinct from her opening-ceremony performance.‌“I played at the inauguration, and now I’m playing at the final,” she said. “I’ve got to wrap my head around it, make it a little different from what I did at the inauguration.”Hinting at the scale of the performance, the singer said: “It’s going to be a shared halftime show… It’s going to be pretty historic, five amazing artists, well, four amazing artists plus me.‌“Madonna is going to be there, BTS, Bieber, Coldplay. I really hope that Chris Martin is going to be singing, too. We’ll all get together, and we’ll all figure it out how it’s gonna be, but I’m really curious. I’m as curious as you are right now!”In addition to the star-studded lineup, the halftime show will feature Nigerian singer Burna Boy, Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel and New York’s PS22 Chorus, with the performance curated by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. The show will support the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, which is aiming to raise $100million in an effort to expand access to education for children.Article continues belowIn a statement, Justin Bieber said: “The FIFA World Cup brings the world together in a way nothing else can. I’m grateful to be part of this halftime show, and even more grateful knowing it’s already helping expand access to education for children around the world.”Burna Boy, who collaborated with Shakira on the tournament’s official song, Day Day, said performing at the final was “a privilege and a responsibility” and an opportunity to represent Africa on the global stage.Like this story?
