The Coimbatore District Police have arrested a 39-year-old man who had been on the run since 2019 after his release on bail in a murder case. The arrested was identified as J. Karthick of Vaiyyapuri Street at Sundakkamuthur near Perur.According to the police, C. Kamalam (70) lived alone at her residence on Bank Street at Sundakkamuthur after the death of her husband. Her son Nagamanickam, who resided at Alandurai with his family, would visit and support her financially.On December 19, 2017, Nagamanickam visited his mother around noon and left later, telling her that he would come back in the evening. When he returned around 9.30 p.m., he found his mother lying dead in the kitchen with severe head injuries.Subsequently, the Perur police launched an investigation and arrested Karthick. According to the police, Karthick entered the woman’s house with the intention of stealing her belongings. When Kamalam raised an alarm, he assaulted her with a grinding stone and fled with her six-gram gold earrings and a mobile phone.Karthik was remanded in judicial custody and was granted bail on May 1, 2019. He absconded and remained untraceable by frequently changing his residence and concealing his identity in different districts. A non-bailable warrant was pending against him for the murder for gain.A special team under the supervision of Deputy Superintendent of Police (Perur Sub-Division) S. Suresh continuously monitored his relatives and local contacts and gathered intelligence on his movements. On Saturday afternoon, the team received credible information that Karthik was roaming around posing as a religious mendicant to avoid detection.Perur Inspector S. Nazeer and members of the special team, comprising Sub-Inspector Vinoth, Special Sub-Inspector Maran, Head Constables Kannadasan and Rajkumar and Grade-I Police Constable Srinivasan, arrested Karthik and produced him before the Fourth Additional District Court-Coimbatore, which remanded him in judicial custody in the Coimbatore Central Prison till August 2.
