Nigerian forward Victor Boniface scored twice as Bayer Leverkusen thrashed Sportfreunde Baumberg 7-0 in a pre-season friendly, while goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo kept a clean sheet as Wrexham edged Manchester United 1-0 in Helsinki, as several Super Eagles stars impressed in pre-season action on Saturday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
New signing Afonso Moreira opened the scoring for Leverkusen with a brace inside the opening 27 minutes, before Christian Kofane added a third to give the Bundesliga side a commanding half-time lead. Boniface then struck twice in four minutes after the restart to complete his own brace, before Robert Andrich made it six in the 56th minute and compatriot Nathan Tella rounded off the rout in the 67th minute.
Boniface, who spent last season on loan at Werder Bremen with his opportunities limited by injury, will hope the return to Leverkusen provides a platform to rediscover consistency at the BayArena.
Okonkwo’s clean sheet in Helsinki followed an encouraging start to Wrexham’s preparations, having earlier kept goal in a scoreless draw with Wisla Krakow, in which he saved a second-half penalty.
