Tadej Pogačar marked his 500th day of racing as a professional on Saturday with his 125th victory and 25th Tour de France stage win, crossing the line 38 seconds ahead of his teammate Isaac Del Toro at Le Markstein in the Vosges mountains.It was also a memorable day for 19-year-old Paul Seixas, who finished third with enough of a gap to seize the white jersey from Juan Ayuso.Earlier, the day’s breakaway formed after Jasper Philipsen had pipped Mads Pedersen to maximum points at the intermediate sprint, and, like yesterday, it contained Tom Pidcock.A sextet comprising EF Education-Easypost pair Ben Healy and Richard Carapaz, the Johannessen brothers from Uno-X, Movistar’s Einer Rubio and Soudal-Quick Step’s Valentin Paret-Peintre (who was chasing King of the Mountain points) pushed on and built a decent advantage over both the Pidcock group and the peloton.But Pogačar wanted victory today, and his UAE squad began to cut the lead on the ascent of the Ballon d’Alsace, the penultimate categorized climb of today’s route — catching Pidcock’s group with 48km to go.The breakaway survived until the final climb of the day — the viciously steep Col du Haag — with Carapaz and Tobias Halland Johannessen the last to be caught after Florian Lipowitz, Seixas and then Jonas Vingegaard all took up the chase — with the two-time Tour champion putting in a monster shift to close the gap.Pogačar’s inevitable attack came with 1.5km of the Col du Haag remaining — he quickly built a lead of around 15 seconds with Vingegaard, Seixas and eventually Del Toro following but no one was catching the yellow jersey, who pulled out more time on the plateau finish and recorded the latest win of his extraordinary career.Jacob Whitehead and Chris Waugh analyze a historic day.
