As soon as I step foot on public transport, my foundation slides south, my mascara migrates north, my hair flattens (but somehow also expands) and my face turns beetroot. As Britain braces for more record-breaking temperatures, beauty becomes less about perfection and more about survival. But with some professional advice and strategic swaps, you can still look cool, even when the thermometer is above 30C. Here’s what you need in your hot-weather arsenal...For sweatinessArriving at the office with a sheen of perspiration? Me too. It sounds simple, but the answer is prioritising cooling your core temperature. Sure, a fan helps. But it’s better to focus on your pulse points, where blood flow is strongest. Yuyu Ice Pulse (£34, argos.co.uk) is a cooling device you wear on your inner wrist. To use, put three tablespoons of water inside and place in the freezer. Once frozen, it stays around 10C for 75 minutes, extracting heat from the blood circulating in key veins, which will help to regulate your body temperature. When it comes to foundation, professional make-up artist Aimee Adams tells me that if you’re a fan of full coverage, then, when the temperature soars, ‘good luck’. If you want staying power, you have to pare it back. Here’s how:✶ Embrace fake tan. Sometimes all you need is a bit of colour to even out skin tone and disguise blemishes. Aimee uses Bare By Vogue Face Tanning Serum (£19.50, boots.com) to add a hint of healthy colour so she doesn’t feel the need to wear heavy make-up.✶ Lighten up. Rather than a thick foundation formula, which will slide off, go for a tint. Naked Sundays BeautyScreen SPF50 Peptide Foundation Tint (£35, sephora.co.uk) evens skin tone with a light wash of colour. You can even make your own tint by mixing some of your foundation into your SPF.For a shiny faceIn hot weather, skin gets greasier and faces get shinier. This is because hot temperatures stimulate your sebaceous glands and sebum production increases, which spreads across the face. While your natural reaction might be to reach for your face powder, Aimee says, ‘It just builds up, making your skin look textured.’ Aimee’s tip is to use blotting sheets, which soak up excess oil and mattify. Plus, they’re pleasingly handbag-sized. Try Muji Face Blotting Paper (£2.50 for 100, muji.co.uk).A recent discovery that Aimee says works wonders on greasy skin is arrowroot powder, which is often used in baking or as a thickening agent for sauces – try Steenbergs Arrowroot (£2.49, hollandandbarrett.com). When applied to the face first thing in the morning, it noticeably mattifies for the rest of the day, dusting down to nothing without the need to reapply. It can be used underneath make-up or on bare skin. Apply with a Real Techniques Powder Brush (£10.99, lookfantastic.com).For panda eyesSadly, a combination of sweat and grease will often leave mascara where we don’t want it: all over our browbones or running down our cheeks. Look for mascaras that are waterproof, smudge-proof or water-resistant. UK Lash Lengthening Mascara (£12, sephora.co.uk) is one that Aimee has put to the test in hot conditions. For greasy hairWhen the sun leaves your locks lank with sweat, there’s always dry shampoo: Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Advanced Clean Dry Shampoo (£27, livingproof.co.uk) is a beauty-editor favourite. Also use a headband to keep your hair out of your face properly while applying your moisturiser or SPF so it doesn’t migrate into your hairline. As a fine-haired woman with a past record of burning her scalp, one product has made a world of difference to me (both to hairline and parting). Supergoop! (Re)setting Powder Sunscreen SPF30 (£28, sephora.co.uk) is a mineral sunscreen that can be used like a hybrid SPF and dry shampoo. It has a soft brush to blend it in and gives you that extra boost of protection without making your hair greasy. For chafingNot the sexiest subject, but this can really up the discomfort of a heatwave. If your thighs get rubbed raw, then may I introduce you to the Megababe Thigh Rescue Anti-Friction Stick (£12, boots.com). This award-winning balm creates a barrier on the skin to stop uncomfortable friction when you walk. For fragrant pitsBody odour is the waste product of bacteria that feed on your sweat. This means that once you’ve started smelling, spraying deodorant on top doesn’t solve the issue. The best way to de-pong is to start from scratch. Fresh Wipes Rinse-Free Body Wipes in Ocean Fresh (£5.99, freshwipes.co.uk) are suitable for use on the body and come in a unisex scent. Once you’re clean and dry, you can go back in with deodorant – don’t use it on damp skin or it’ll be less efficient. If you’d like to freshen up ‘down there’, be aware that scented products can cause irritation. Luna Daily The Everywhere Spray-To-Wipe (£8, lookfantastic.com) is fragrance-free, microbiome safe and pH suitable for use on your most delicate areas.Under a tennerMCoBeauty Lip Stain & Sculpt (£9, superdrug.com) is perfect for glamming up in the heat. It gives you a wash of colour that doesn’t slide anywhere.Snagged your nail?Apply Essie Break Fix (£14.99, boots.com) on the crack of a clean, dry nail, press while it dries, then apply another thin coat on the break. It will help patch it up so it’s less likely to catch again, though make sure to wear gloves when washing up if you want it to last.Looking to upgrade your beauty routine?
