Abhijeet Dipke, founding president of the Cockroach Janta Party, on Saturday began an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar after climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was shifted to a hospital by Delhi Police following a 20-day fast, alleging a police crackdown on protesters and calling on supporters to continue the agitation.Addressing supporters at Jantar Mantar, Dipke said he was commencing an indefinite hunger strike and appealed to people not to back down.Also Read: Sonam Wangchuk moved to hospital after 20-day hunger strike at Jantar Mantar"I am commencing my indefinite hunger strike starting today. They have made a grave mistake," he said, urging people to gather at Jantar Mantar and participate in the march scheduled for July 20.Earlier in the day, Dipke alleged on X that Delhi Police had "cracked down" at Jantar Mantar, accusing personnel of assaulting protesters and forcibly taking Wangchuk away. In separate posts, he claimed he had been "beaten up and put under detention" by Delhi Police. He also reposted claims by another social media user alleging that students were subjected to a lathi-charge while Wangchuk was being taken from the protest site. ET could not independently verify these claims.The development came hours after Delhi Police shifted Wangchuk to a hospital, citing directions from the Delhi High Court and medical advice due to the activist's deteriorating health after a 20-day hunger strike.In a post on X, DCP New Delhi said protesters attempted to obstruct the process, leading to a "slight commotion", but police exercised restraint and safely completed the evacuation.Also Read: Sonam Wangchuk's wife says no treatment should be administered to him without her consent"While complying with the orders of Hon'ble High Court the protestors tried to create obstruction, in which slight commotion ensued, however police took maximum restrain and undertook the exercise safely," the DCP said.
