Gunther opened the night trying to justify his attitude problem, Cody Rhodes wasn't having any of it, and by the end of the broadcast their match had been thrown out entirely. Along the way, the Women's Championship picture got a shakeup that fans have been waiting on for weeks.Gunther and Cody Rhodes set the tone before the bell even rangThe show kicked off with Gunther grabbing a mic to a chorus of boos, insisting he's been mistreated since arriving on SmackDown and that Nick Aldis has it out for him personally. Acting general manager Adam Pearce shut that down fast, reminding Gunther that Aldis is the reason he still has a job after choking him out. Pearce laid out the stakes for Saturday Night's Main Event: if Gunther and Sami Zayn beat Cody Rhodes and CM Punk, Gunther gets added to a fatal four-way for the title at SummerSlam.Cody wasn't willing to wait. He stormed the ring, sent Gunther to the floor, and demanded a one-on-one match right there on SmackDown. Pearce made it official, and the fans in Albany went off.Pearce also dropped a bigger bombshell, announcing Rhea Ripley won't be able to compete at SummerSlam. That kicked off a series of ladder match qualifiers to crown an interim Women's Champion.Finn Balor vs. Talla TongaFinn Balor kicked off the show against Talla Tonga, backed by Tama Tonga at ringside. The two traded control for a while, with Talla using power to ground Balor and Balor firing back with strikes and speed. After a late push from Talla that included a big boot for a near fall, Balor turned it around, taking out Tama on the floor with a sling blade before finishing Talla off in the ring with back-to-back Coup de Grâce moves.Result: Finn Balor via pinfallInterim Women's Championship Ladder Match Qualifier: Tiffany Stratton vs. Jacy JayneBefore the bell even rang, Fatal Influence jumped Stratton, only for the Women's Tag Team Champions to run out and clear them to the back. Once the match got going, Stratton and Jayne traded big offense, including simultaneous crossbodies and a hanging neckbreaker from Jayne. Stratton answered with a cutter off the ropes before landing the PME on Jayne for the pin.Result: Tiffany Stratton via pinfallInterim Women's Championship Ladder Match Qualifier: Jade Cargill vs. Nia JaxCargill made her entrance with Michin and B-Fab in tow to face Jax, who was already in the ring. The match itself got cut short when Charlotte Flair ran in and attacked Michin, then went after Cargill's arm with a steel chair before Michin and B-Fab made the save. A furious Jax attacked Flair from behind afterward, and Cargill capped things off by hitting Flair with the Jaded. Jax and Flair are now set to meet next week in another ladder qualifier.Result: Jade Cargill via disqualificationAAA World Tag Team Champions War Raiders vs. Fraxiom This one went back and forth, with Fraxiom picking up momentum through a moonsault from Axiom and a Phoenix splash from Frazer that nearly got the job done. War Raiders survived the flurry, and Erik and Ivar eventually wore Axiom down, with Ivar covering him for the win as the Albany crowd stayed locked in for the closing stretch.Result: War Raiders via pinfallCody Rhodes vs. GuntherCody jumped Gunther before he could even get to the ring, setting an aggressive tone early. Gunther eventually took control with strikes and a half crab submission, but Cody fought back with a dragon screw and figure four. The match spiraled into chaos when Sami Zayn ran in to attack CM Punk at ringside, dragging both men into the fight. Punk and Gunther ended up brawling, then Sami and Punk, and officials had to flood the ring to separate everyone as the show closed.Result: No contest.
