Stocks in the materials sector fell alongside most other sectors as geopolitical tensions weighed on sentiment.

Alcoa cut its full-year alumina guidance, citing issues at its Pinjarra, Australia refinery, and said alumina prices remained stable despite uncertainty about global shipments driven by the war in Iran. Alcoa announced adjusted second-quarter earnings per share of $2.12 and Ebitda of $901 million from sales of $4 billion. Wall Street was looking for earnings per share of $2.55 and Ebitda of $943 million from sales of $4 billion, according to FactSet.
