Andy Burnham’s uncontested election as the new Labour leader was confirmed at a special conference in London.

Mr Burnham said his appointment marked “the most significant change” in politics for 40 years – and insisted that he was ready with “a plan” for government.

Announcing the result, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said it was “hardly a nailbiter”.

But there might be some nail-biting over the weekend, as Labour MPs wait to find out who will be in the new Cabinet on Monday.
