July 17 (UPI) -- Sam Burns and Lucas Herbert carded matching second-round 62s to tie the record for the lowest round at a major Friday at the 2026 British Open.

Herbert, who was tied for 39th at even par through 18 holes at Royal Birkdale, used his 8-under to climb atop the leaderboard by Friday afternoon in Southport, England.

Burns, who was tied for 106th after a first-round 73, jumped inside the Top 5 through 36 holes.

"Coming into today, I thought that if I could get into the red numbers for the golf tournament, it would be a pretty good spot," Burns, the No. 18 player in the Official World Golf Ranking, told reporters. "The finish on the last three holes was just a bonus."
