A few information technology (IT) employees staged a protest in front of the Guindy Head Post Office on Friday, condemning the recent layoffs carried out by CorroHealth and demanding justice for the affected employees. Muruganandam, president, Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), South Chennai District, led the protest.Earlier this month, CorroHealth laid off around 500 employees at its Ernakulam office and another 316 employees at its Kozhikode office. “The company also has a presence in Chennai, but there is no information if anyone has been terminated here,” said Alagunambi Welkin, General Secretary of the Union of IT and ITES Employees (UNITE).The key demands raised during the protest were that CorroHealth should immediately reinstate the employees who were laid off, and both the Central and State governments should introduce effective regulations to govern the IT industry and safeguard the rights and welfare of IT employees.“The labour codes introduced by the Union government do not provide effective penalties against companies that violate labour laws. As a result, State Labour Departments have little incentive or authority to act decisively against such violations,” said Mr. Welkin. “These labour codes, which fail to protect workers while effectively providing legal cover for the inhumane practices of large corporations, must be withdrawn,” he added.
