Andy Flower has ruled himself out of succeeding Brendon McCullum as coach of the England Test team, dashing the England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) hopes of reinstating the man who led the team to three Ashes victories in his previous spell in the job.Flower was the ECB’s first choice to take over from McCullum, who was sacked on Sunday after four years in charge, after reinventing himself as the most successful coach in world franchise cricket.The Zimbabwean, England’s head coach from 2009 to 2014, led Royal Challengers Bengaluru to the Indian Premier League (IPL) title in each of the last two years. He won The Hundred with Trent Rockets in 2022.The English governing body were prepared to let him ‘job share’ and stay in India during the IPL window that stretches from late March until May.They were even contemplating Flower missing Test matches to work in the IPL — for example, when there is a clash with the 150th anniversary Test against Australia in Melbourne next year — in a compromise that would have been unthinkable during his first stint in charge.But, in another huge blow to England, Flower ruled himself out at the media day of his new Hundred club, London Spirit, where he starts work in this year’s competition next week.“We’re all aware of the vacancy for the head coach of the England team and I have spoken with Rob Key (the England men’s managing director) on that topic,” Flower told reporters at Lord’s on Friday.“The bottom line is that I’m very happy in the work I’m doing at the moment. I work for a couple of really good organisations. I’ve got really good teams around me and I’m really comfortable with what I’m doing.
