Lithuanian prosecutors have launched a pretrial investigation after a 12-year-old girl was assaulted in a public park in the southern town of Marijampolė, while other teenagers filmed the attack and shared the footage on social media.
The assault took place at about 19:30 Wednesday in Marijampolė’s Poetry Park. Videos circulating online appear to show a teenage girl repeatedly striking the victim, who was sitting with her head lowered, with a mobile phone.
According to prosecutors, the victim was hit dozens of times with hands, feet and the phone. She was taken to a medical facility after the attack, and her family later filed a complaint with police.
The Kaunas Regional Prosecutor’s Office has opened a pretrial investigation on suspicion of disturbing public order.
Deputy Chief Prosecutor Vilma Sakalauskienė of the Marijampolė District Prosecutor’s Office said the girls knew each other and that the conflict appears to have stemmed from comments posted on social media.
