Over 4,000 students await resolution of NSFAS investigations as Deputy Minister Cassim calls for urgent action.
More than 4,000 students remain trapped in unresolved NSFAS funding investigations, prompting Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training Yusuf Cassim to intervene and demand faster action from the financial aid scheme.
The intervention follows a meeting between Cassim and NSFAS Administrator Professor Hlengani Mathebula, where concerns over lengthy funding investigation delays, outstanding student appeals, allowance payments and uncertainty around second-semester registrations were discussed.
NSFAS revealed that it is still awaiting academic data from institutions for 4,138 students whose cases are under GAP investigations, a verification process used to confirm registration, academic eligibility, accommodation and enrolment details.
Cassim criticised the lengthy delays, saying students should not be left waiting for months for answers.
