NewsWorld newsBus AccidentAt least 20 pupils and one adult have been killed after a bus carrying pupils on a school trip crashed in Kapchorwa, eastern Uganda, local officials have said10:22, 17 Jul 2026Updated 10:45, 17 Jul 2026At least 20 children and one adult have been killed after a school bus ploughed into a rock on a treacherous road in eastern Uganda.‌Multiple others are believed to have sustained injuries in the collision, which occurred as the group were returning from a school trip to Sipi Falls waterfalls, a tourist area.‌The driver reportedly lost control of the bus after appearing to have experienced a mechanical failure at around 8pm local time on Thursday, the Uganda Police Force said.‌The vehicle then veered off Chekwatit Hill in Kawowo, which officials said has been the site of several serious crashes.Police said survivors, including three adults and several children, were taken to local hospitals. Authorities did not immediately give an exact number of how many people were injured.The bus was carrying pupils from King David Junior School, an elementary school based in Ndejje. Witnesses at the scene had taken videos of the badly damaged bus while locals rushed to help the injured children.‌"The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road, struck a large stone along the roadside, and overturned," police said."The bodies of the deceased were conveyed to Kapchorwa Mortuary pending identification and postmortem examinations."The Uganda Police Force extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved families, the management of King David Junior School, and all those affected by this tragic incident.
