Photo credit: IAFThe Indian Air Force's Rafale fighter jets have arrived in Australia to participate in Exercise Pitch Black 2026. The exercise will be held from July 20 to August 7 and bring together air forces from 19 nations for complex, combat-oriented missions aimed at enhancing interoperability and operational cooperation.The Indian contingent comprises of four Rafale fighters jets, two C-17 transport aircraft and more than 120 air warriors.Announcing the deployment on X, the Indian Air Force said its contingent had landed in Australia for Exercise Pitch Black 2026, describing the biennial drill as a premier multinational air combat exercise that brings together air forces from 19 nations.The IAF said its Rafale fighters will train alongside friendly air forces to enhance interoperability, strengthen operational cooperation, sharpen operational synergy and facilitate the exchange of best practices. The post concluded with the message, "Ready. Capable. Focused."The Indian High Commission in Canberra said that Indian contingent had arrived in Darwin and would participate in the three weeks exercise alongside partner nations.Exercise Pitch Black is the Royal Australian Air Force's (RAAF) premier biennial multinational air combat exercise and one of the largest military aviation drills in the Indo-Pacific. Exercise had been held in Darwin since 1983The exercise will involve more than 100 aircraft and personnel from 19 allied and partner nations, including Brunei, Canada, Fiji, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Sweden, Thailand and the United States.Exercise Commander Air Commodore Matthew McCormack described Pitch Black 2026 as the Royal Australian Air Force's largest collective training activity with partner and allied nations."Exercise Pitch Black 2026 is Air Force's largest, collective training activity with our partners and allies," AIRCDRE McCormack said."It's where we plan together, fight together and learn together through realistic and complex training scenarios."He added that the 2026 edition builds on lessons from the 2024 exercise and remains a sought-after activity because of Australia's vast military training airspace.For the Indian Air Force, the deployment offers an opportunity to train alongside some of the world's leading air forces, enhance coalition warfighting capabilities and deepen defence cooperation with partners in the Indo-Pacific.
