Beijing-based AI start-up Moonshot is preparing to release an open-weight model with capabilities approaching those of US labs such as Anthropic, the Financial Times reported.
The release of Moonshot’s Kimi K3, with 2 trillion to 3 trillion parameters, is expected in the coming days, the report said, citing two unnamed people.
It is expected to exceed the performance of Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8 on mainstream benchmarks, the report said.

Unlike Anthropic’s models, however, Kimi models are open-weight, meaning they can be freely downloaded, customised and run on local hardware.
