Meet the new play callersThere are 32 (!!) new play callers in 2026. In all, NFL franchises hired 10 new head coaches, 21 new offensive coordinators and 14 new defensive coordinators. That must be a record.Some coaches retained play-calling duties while adding new coordinators, like Andy Reid in Kansas City, who hired Eric Bienemy as offensive coordinator. Others were elevated from roles that already included play calling, like Joe Brady in Buffalo, while others still saw promotions, like Brad Idzik being handed the Panthers’ play calling duties.So while we have 45 new coaches with significant responsibility, only these 32 will be new play callerss in 2026:With 22 of the 32 teams employing someone new for all of us to yell at (seriously, what was Sean Payton thinking?), I’ve found things you should know about these coaches.We’ll start with four of the younger offensive play callers:Ravens OC Declan Doyle is the youngest at 30 years old, but already has a decade of football experience, including a stint as Ben Johnson’s OC in Chicago in 2025.Commanders OC David Blough is the second-youngest of this group, turning 31 in a few weeks. One of two first-time play callers in Washington, Blough plans to protect Jayden Daniels via an improved rushing attack and play-action.Broncos OC Davis Webb, at age 31, is just five years older than Bo Nix. He’s also a highly coveted offensive mind, which made keeping him in Denver a potential reason for his promotion to play caller.Falcons OC Tommy Rees, age 34, wants his quarterbacks under center, which is great news for Bijan Robinson’s fantasy prospects. That’ll be a change for Michael Penix Jr., however.
