He had been in charge for almost eight years, guiding the Three Lions to a semi-final and quarter-final at the World Cup as well as back-to-back European Championship finals.‌Although Southgate was unable to get the Three Lions across the line and deliver a first major trophy in more than five decades, he did a stellar job to bring them back competing with the elite of international football.‌But now, two years on from his England exit, Southgate could be set to return to the dugout with the ex-Middlesbrough boss tipped to replace Pochettino at USA after their thumping Round of 16 exit. ESPN have tipped Southgate to be looked at as a replacement should Pochettino leave his role.Senior editor Caitlin Murray states: "We've seen a lot of successful club coaches make the jump to the international game ahead of this World Cup without a ton to show for it: not just Mauricio Pochettino, but Carlo Ancelotti, Julian Nagelsmann, Ralf Rangnick, Hugo Broos and others."The international game - especially an eight-game tournament - just doesn't work the same way as the 30-plus-game season of a club game. And let's be clear: With the U.S. now having a permanently cushy World Cup qualification path thanks to the World Cup expanding to 48 teams, all the USMNT's focus ought to be on the 2030 World Cup. On that basis, Southgate warrants a look."Pochettino's future as USMNT head coach is under threat with his contract set to expire this summer. The Argentine was brought in ahead of the home World Cup but saw his US side bow out with a 4-1 defeat to Belgium.‌Speculation has since risen about whether Pochettino will remain as US head coach moving forward after he was linked with a shock return to the Premier League and the role - which has now been filled - at AC Milan.Speaking after the loss to Belgium - which ended a spirited USA World Cup run - Pochettino refused to be drawn on his future amid rumours he could return to Europe. "Now is not a moment to talk about that," he said in his post-match press conference at the time."I think now is a moment to see, to assess the tournament.
