Two Toronto hospitals saw a sharp spike in emergency room visits for respiratory illnesses on Wednesday as wildfire smoke blew into the city and clogged the air.

The smoke from northwestern Ontario gave Toronto some of the worst air quality in the world over the past two days, and residents are feeling the effects. There were 80 per cent more patients battling respiratory issues compared to July 1, an average day two weeks ago, at Toronto General Hospital and Toronto Western Hospital, according to a spokesperson for UHN.
