If the new and MAGA-approved CBS is planning a season of CSI: Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, the writers are really going to need their imaginations to make the concept pay off. Donald Trump and his administration have claimed, without compelling evidence of any kind, that vandals, pro-algae activists, and/or some sort of pool-and-greatness-hating Democratic enemy within have besieged the landmark and ruined its Trump-ordered $16 million makeover. The FBI even sent over an evidence-gathering team to the now re-drained pool with laser scanners on Wednesday. But it turns out the only real crime may have been the haphazard no-bid renovation done by Trump’s handpicked contractor.
A new investigation by the Washington Post reveals that the now notorious peeling of the newly applied “American flag blue” liner was most likely the result of a flawed installation, not box-cutter-armed miscreants who for some reason invaded the pool and slashed it.
President Trump has been quick to blame his pool problems on outside agitators, and the length of the gashes they purportedly cut in its spray-on bottom have grown with each telling (it’s now up to 300 yards, which would be half the length of the pool). His administration’s crackdown on these alleged criminals was as swift as it was confused. AI-enabled cameras went up, the National Guard was redeployed, and authorities detained people, made some arrests, and indicted an Olympic canoeist who apparently stopped by after a long bike ride and touched and allegedly pulled on one of the peels.
