OTTAWA — The federal government chose General Dynamics Land Systems — the subsidiary of an American company with a big footprint in London, Ont. — as the first “strategic partner” that will get special treatment under its defence industrial plan, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Thursday, while awarding the firm a “nearly” $2-billion contract to build new armoured vehicles for the Canadian Army.
The new contract will see the firm’s facility in London churn out 190 armoured combat support vehicles over four years, Carney said. This will add to a previous, $2.1-billion order in recent years for 360 vehicles that the army has said are used for ambulances, “mobile repair and recovery,” engineering support and combat operations.
