Around 4,500 students and allies gathered in Mumbai’s Azad Maidan on July 16 to voice their solidarity with the ongoing NEET (National Eligibility-cum Entrance Test) protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi as well as those voicing similar grievances in Maharashtra. The protest organised by ‘Mumbai Cockroaches,’ a part of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), involved students of varying ranges dissenting against the injustice faced by the country’s students including the recent TET (Teacher Eligibility Test) exam malpractices, issues in MPSC exams, blatant delays in the exam process and the lack of transparency in the process.Students speaking to businessline asked that the government hold itself to same strict standards of compliance as those held for the NEET aspirants.hunger strikesSome students also took up one-day hunger strikes at the protest ground in solidarity with activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has lost nearly 9 kg since starting his fast nearly three weeks now.The protest went on from 10 am to 5 pm after which a delegation met with State Minister Girish Mahajan to put forward their demands, namely: resignation of Maharashtra Education Minister Dada Bhuse, an inquiry into the TET exam malpractices and irregularities in the MPSC exams. A delegation is also set to meet Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on July 20 to stress their demands on the matter.“We expect the Maharashtra government to take serious note of this protest and take immediate concrete decisions to provide justice to the students,” said the Mumbai Cockroaches in their letter to the government.Published on July 16, 2026
