The Hyderabad Disaster Response & Asset Protection Agency has commenced restoration and development works at Pedda Cheruvu of Nacharam. HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath on Thursday (July 16) inaugurated the project for the 108.30-acre lake, which is being taken up at an estimated cost of ₹28 crore. The project includes construction of a strengthened bund, a walkway, seating areas, parks, children’s play zones, open gyms and yoga platforms to create a recreational space for residents of all age groups. Addressing reporters, the Commissioner said desilting of the lake to a depth of 10 feet is under way and the entire project is expected to be completed within nine months.Ranganath said restoration of lakes undertaken by HYDRAA has not only helped mitigate monsoon flooding but has also contributed to improved groundwater levels. At Nacharam lake, plastic waste is being removed as part of the restoration, and similar benefits to groundwater recharge are expected. He said the project would also address long-standing problems of sewage, foul odour and mosquito infestation, while creating a cleaner and more pleasant environment for local residents.Later, the Commissioner inspected Nagireddy Kunta at Yapral in Medchal-Malkajgiri district following complaints from residents about encroachments within the lake’s full tank level (FTL) area and on adjoining government land.Residents informed the Commissioner that diversion of the flood channel connecting Nagireddy Kunta to Oora Cheruvu, coupled with encroachments that narrowed the drain, had resulted in flooding of nearby residential colonies and upstream areas. The Commissioner directed HYDRAA officials to take immediate steps to resolve the issue and address the encroachments. Published - July 16, 2026 08:31 pm IST
