Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs L. Murugan launched the Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) in Periyar Nagar on Thursday.This is the second such facility in the city after Chennai GPO. Pointing out that the new POPSK would benefit north Chennai residents, Mr. Murugan said the post offices had been integrated to provide public utility services, including banking, insurance, and Aadhar services, under a single roof.The Union government is working to ensure that government services reach people at the grassroots level. The benefits of various central social welfare schemes are being transferred directly into the bank accounts of beneficiaries through the Direct Benefit Transfer mechanism since 2014.Mr. Murugan handed over the first passport processed at the new centre to the parents of a six-month-old infant. This is part of the goal of the Union Ministry of External Affairs to open one POPSK in every Parliamentary constituency. Designed to handle high density of applicants from north Chennai and its fringes, the POPSK will initially cater to about 40 applicants daily before gradually scaling up to 90.The Department of Posts already operates POPSK centres in other districts, including Vellore, Villupuram, Ranipet, and Kancheepuram. Chennai North MP Kalanidhi Veeraswamy, Ministry of External Affairs Joint Secretary Isha Srivastava, Chief Postmaster General (Tamil Nadu Circle) Mariamma Thomas, and Regional Passport Officer (Chennai) S.
