Health Minister K. Muraleedharan has written to the Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala requesting an investigation into the alleged theft of funds linked to the functioning of the Hospital Development Society at Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College.The action follows serious findings in the audit report of the HDS. The 2021 audit report uncovered irregularities amounting to ₹46 lakh. In the light of this, the Medical College’s Medical Superintendent handed over the audit report to the government for further action.Daily revenue from the HMC lab, MRI scan, and ultrasound scan sections had been entered in the ledger but was not deposited in the bank, indicating misappropriation. The Minister decided to order a detailed investigation as on the face of it, the report pointed to serious financial irregularities and lapses in financial management.Apart from failure to deposit money in the bank, the audit report also flags shortcomings in the maintenance and scrutiny of accounts, lack of clarity regarding investments and various debtors and defaulters and the failure to deduct statutory taxes from payments made to annual maintenance contractors and security service providers.Taking into account the seriousness of the audit report’s findings, necessary legal action must be taken to establish the facts and bring to book those responsible for the irregularities, Mr. Muraleedharan said .The letter to the Home Minister states that the case should be handed over to an appropriate agency for a comprehensive investigation, and that legal action, including registration of a criminal case based on the facts, should be initiated.
