US President Donald Trump announced that the Islamic Republic had released an American citizen who had been detained in Iran since December 2024.

In a post on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote that Iran had allowed the American citizen, whom he said had been “wrongfully” detained during Joe Biden’s presidency, to leave the country. Without disclosing the individual’s identity, Trump stated that the citizen had safely departed Iran in good health and concluded by expressing appreciation for what he termed a “goodwill gesture by Iran.”

Hours after the message was published, Jared Genser, a Washington-based human rights lawyer, announced that the released individual was Dena Karari, an Iranian-American citizen.

“I am pleased to announce that my client, Dena Karari, who had been detained in Iran since December 2024 on baseless charges, is now free,” Genser said in a statement.

He also claimed that Karari’s release would not have been possible without the “relentless and extraordinary efforts” of Donald Trump, adding that his client was now safe and en route back to the United States.
