The new cases come amid speculation about snap elections
Four sitting lawmakers from the ruling New Democracy party are among those facing criminal proceedings launched by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) over allegedly illegal farm subsidies granted in 2021.
The involvement of sitting lawmakers comes amid growing polarisation in Greek politics ahead of national elections due in 2027, alongside mounting speculation about voters could head to the polls as early as this autumn.
In 2025, the European Public Prosecutor’s Office in Athens launched an investigation into alleged fraud involving agricultural subsidies, implicating farmers, politicians and Greece’s state agency responsible for distributing EU funds, OPEKEPE.
EPPO has estimated the overall damage to the EU budget at €2.9 million.
