Thinking Machines Lab, founded by former senior OpenAI executives, has released its first general-purpose model, called Inkling, as it works toward a vision of making AI tech that’s accessible and customisable.

Inkling is fully open-weight, meaning users can download and customise it, and the start-up says its performance is comparable to other open-weight models – the most advanced of which are developed in China.

However, rather than performance, the model is designed to be a “good open-weights base for customisation”, the firm said.
