ByAMIR BOHBOTJULY 16, 2026 10:16Updated: JULY 16, 2026 10:27The crisis over the American refueling aircraft parked at Ben-Gurion Airport, thought to be resolved, is now escalating from the military to the diplomatic arena. While the Transportation Ministry announced Wednesday that a solution had been reached to relocate the United States' assets to other sites after the Israel Airports Authority said that continued use of the airport could severely disrupt commercial operations, American military sources on Thursday stated the alternative solutions do not meet the needs of the US military. Defense Minister Israel Katz and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are expected to address the issue directly. The demand for the US to utilize the airport stems from the need for the US military to prepare for regional worst-case scenarios, including an attack on its bases in the Persian Gulf, a situation that would require available Israeli logistical support.Despite agreements to reduce the force that may have been reached, the US military is now demanding to remain at the airport. They are even requesting to increase its presence ahead of emergency scenarios involving Tehran. That decision is being referred to the senior political leadership.US Air Force Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker aerial refueling aircraft are parked at Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv on February 25, 2026 (credit: CHAIM GOLDBERG/FLASH90)US military officials made clear alternative solutions were not suitableA senior US military source familiar with the details of the situation said that representatives of the US military made clear to the IDF Planning Directorate that the alternatives offered to them were not suitable.According to the source, the other sites in Israel where the aircraft were proposed to be moved are very crowded and do not meet the Pentagon's safety and operational threshold. It would make it difficult for them to go from zero to 100 in real time. As a result, the American military representatives made clear that they must remain at Ben Gurion Airport. The current crisis is developing after a period of tension between the Transportation Ministry and the security establishment.US aircraft parked at the airport are harming commercial operationsTransportation Minister Miri Regev previously demanded that the refueling aircraft be removed and that their number be limited to 20, in order to prevent harm to the civilian flight schedule at the height of the summer vacation. The IDF, with the backing of IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, opposed moving the aircraft to Air Force bases in the Negev. Now, in light of the threats from Tehran, the American position is upending the situation and turning the parking issue into a diplomatic challenge requiring intervention at the prime minister level.Follow us on Google
