Kurfi, who was recently granted bail by a Chief Magistrates' Court in Katsina, said he had been remanded in custody on nearly 10 different occasions, maintaining that his repeated imprisonment was a consequence of speaking out on issues affecting society.

Dr. Bashir Kurfi, the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria lecturer and public affairs commentator who was recently remanded in prison after alleging that the Katsina State Government sponsored some bandit leaders to perform the Hajj pilgrimage, has declared that his latest detention is not the first time he has been imprisoned over his struggle for justice.

Kurfi, who was recently granted bail by a Chief Magistrates' Court in Katsina, said he had been remanded in custody on nearly 10 different occasions, maintaining that his repeated imprisonment was a consequence of speaking out on issues affecting society.

In a video obtained by SaharaReporters, Kurfi addressed his supporters in the Hausa shortly after regaining his freedom, recounting his experience inside the Katsina Correctional Centre and lamenting what he described as the harsh conditions endured by poor inmates.

According to him, the correctional facility is plagued by severe mosquito infestation and poor sanitary conditions, which he said expose inmates, particularly the poor, to immense suffering.
