Iran has released a “wrongfully detained” U.S. citizen, President Donald Trump said July 15 on social media as the United States peppered its Middle East foe with fresh military strikes.“The United States of America appreciates this gesture of Goodwill by Iran!” Trump said on social media, adding that the person was safely outside Iran and in good condition.International human rights lawyer Jared Genser identified the person as Dena Karari, a dual citizen of the United States and Iran.Genser said on X he was “delighted and excited to report” that Karari was free and headed back to the United States, adding she had been in Iran since December 2024 "on bogus charges." He credited the president’s efforts as crucial to her release. In 2023, Genser, the human rights lawyer known as "the extractor," also represented Siamak Namazi, one of five Iranian American dual citizens whose release was negotiated by then-President Joe Biden’s administration in exchange for jailed Iranians.According to a profile that same year in The Guardian, Genser had helped free more than 300 prisoners of conscience from 20 countries over the previous two decades. The latest attacks on Iran come as the United States revives its blockade of Iranian shipping as the two sides vie to control the Strait of Hormuz.
